ROBERT HERRICK (1591-1674) is a well known poet of the 17th century. His poems have simplicity, lucidity und brevity. This poem “To Daffodils” deals with the perishable nature of daffodils which ultimately suggests the transitory existence of all human beings. Nothing is static in this world. Marked by a note of sudness, the poem has philosophical overtones.
रॉबर्ट हेरिक (1591-1674) सतरहवी सदी के जाने माने कवि हैं। उनकी कविताओं में सादापन और संक्षेपण है। यह कविता ‘To Daffodils’ नष्ट होनेवाले कमल के समान फूल डेफोडील्स के बारे में वर्णन करती है जो आखिकार मानव जाति के क्षणिक ठहराव को बताती है। संसार में कुछ भी स्थिर नहीं है। उदासी में चिह्नित यह कविता दार्शनिका आवाज में प्रस्तुत की गई है।

Fair Daffodils, we weep to see
You haste away so soon;
As yet the early-rising Sun
Has not attain’d his noon.
Stay, stay,
Until the hasting day
Has run
But to the even-song;
And, having pray’d together, we

We have short time to stay, as you,
We have as short a Spring;
As quick a growth to meet decay
As you, or any thing.
We die,
As your hours do, and dry

सुंदर डेफोडील्स, मैं तुम्हें शीघ्र ही समाप्त होते देखकर बहुत दुखी होता हूँ। तुम्हें सुबह में उगते सूर्य के साथ देखता हूँ लेकिन तुम दोपहर तक नहीं रह पाते। तबतक ठहर जाओ जबतक कि जल्द ही दिन समाप्त न हो जाए और हम साथ-साथ प्रार्थना करेंगे और साथ-साथ चल देंगे।
हमारे पास संसार में रहने का बहुत कम समय है। तुम्हारी ही तरह हमारे पास भी कम ही वसंत हैं। जिस तरह तुम वृद्धि कर शीघ्र ही सड़ जाते हो उसी प्रकार की स्थिति सभी के साथ है।
हम भी मर जाते हैं जैसे तुम कुछ ही घंटे तक रहते हो और सूख जाते हो। ग्रीष्मऋतु की वर्षा की भाँति या सुबह के ओस के मोती समान बूंदों की भाँति हमें कभी भी दोबारा दिखाई नहीं पड़ते।
